This is one ointment that doesn't smell so amazing, you either love it or hate it. But after a few applications you won't mind the smell once you see the results.

From the founder of Boston Park Equine:

"I discovered Neem Oil when I first bought my Friesian Eclipse in about 2018, I had never had a horse with such bad itch. I tried all the usual remedies with no success and then someone suggested Neem Oil. I have never looked back. Combined with Citronella, Coconut oil, Rosemary, Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, BPE Repel and Repair provides your itchy horse with everything it it needs to both repel the midges and repair the skin, not often you find a product that does both. Those who have dealt with the dreaded itch will know that it's not just the bites that are the problem, but the dry irritated skin as well."

As this is an oil based product, it may stain rugs.

Rugging is highly recommended for itchy horses.

Have you noticed a difference in the colour or even the texture of your Repel & Repair?  Don't worry this is totally normal. Neem Oil which makes up about 25% of the mixture of Repel & Repair is a totally natural oil and depending on when and where it is collected and harvested the colour can vary from a golden yellow to a rich brown, as it is purchased from a highly reputable Australian based supplier, the oil is tested and meets all the requirements that make it awesome.  As for the texture, both neem oil and coconut oil are semi liquids, meaning they melt at very low temperatures (about 23 degrees), so depending on the time of year the texture will change. In winter, if your Repel and Repair is a bit too solid, just pop it in the sun for a little while.

  • Best applied to clean, dry skin.
  • Please ensure you spot test to make sure your horse is not sensitive. If an irritation occurs, please discontinue use immediately.
  • For eternal equine use only, use caution around the eyes.
  • Use caution in summer as this product is oil based and may cause sunburn.
  • Wear gloves as the smell tends to not wash away, but this product will not harm human skin, in fact its great for humans as well as horses.
  • Store out of the sun in a cool dry area.
  • Coconut oil will soften in the heat.
  • DO NOT USE IN PREGNANT MARES, MARE YOU ARE TRYING TO BREED, OR IF PREGNANT YOURSELF.  Neem oil has the ability to negatively affect hormones when used internally, topically the risk is extremely low, but there is a risk.  Please contact Boston Park Equine if you would like some more information.

BPE Repel and Repair ointment contains the following active ingredients;

Neem Oil - Is one of those super oils that has not just one but numerous uses for both horses and humans. Neem Oil helps stop insects biting, deeply moisturises and soothes the skin, and encourages rapid hair regrowth. Neem oil will soften and remove scabs such as those resulting from rain scald or greasy heel, tackle itching and encourage hair regrowth.

Neem seeds also contain a few chemicals that have sulphur. This is where the characteristic smell to the neem oil comes from. Neem oil and many of its constituents have been successfully used against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Due to its unique composition it has an almost magical effect on chronic skin conditions.

Neem oil should not be used in pregnant mares. Or if pregnant yourself, wear gloves. Neem oil has the potential to effect hormones.

Citronella - The powerfully intense, smooth and lemony aroma of Citronella is often associated with insect repellent, but the benefits of citronella, extend far beyond this. The 100% pure citronella java essential oil used in this ointment is regarded as being of higher quality than common citronella oils. The antiseptic properties within citronella oil also makes it a great addition for both repelling and repairing.

Beeswax - The anti-inflammatory properties of beeswax encourage the healing of wounds. It is also protective, helping form a barrier between the skin and the environment without clogging pores. It is high in vitamin A, which has been found to support cell reconstruction and health.  Beeswax has been found to help soothe and facilitate the healing of abrasions. It prevents harmful bacteria from entering the body through chapped and broken skin and it provides the skin with a layer of protection against external irritants.  It's great for treating scrapes, minor cuts, minor wounds, and burns, among other abrasions.

Coconut Oil - Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is an EXTRA virgin oil that is not refined, deodorised or bleached, and is hexane-free.  It is an excellent skin moisturiser and softener, and is known as one of nature's best remedies for treating dry skin. It can also reduce inflammation, keeping skin moisturised and helping heal wounds. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil also possess antimicrobial properties that can help protect the skin from harmful bacteria.

Coconut oil helps bolster the skin's protective barrier layer, trapping moisture inside and keeping skin supple and hydrated. It has anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for wounds and injuries and it also Increases collagen production to assist in healing and the reduction of scars.

Vitamin E - is not a single vitamin, but rather a group of fat-soluble vitamins with antioxidant effects. It can assist in speeding up healing and improve the cosmetic outcome of wounds and scars. Vitamin E has been shown to have great moisturising properties for the skin that can help reduce itchiness.  Vitamin E also stabilises the ointment, extending its shelf life meaning that synthetic preservatives are not needed.

Aloe Vera - is renowned for its many beneficial properties and has been used for treating skin complaints since ancient times. Aloe vera is soothing to burns, stings, rashes and other skin irritations. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera is also noted for its effectiveness in reducing pain and swelling. Its nourishing, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties also make aloe vera a great natural treatment for itchy skin and dry hair.

Rosemary - is used for helping to encourage hair growth, remedy dandruff and dry skin and slow down greying in horses and humans. It can also be very soothing. Rosemary has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation, killing bacteria and help to increase circulation and provide warmth to the skin and underlying muscles.  As rosemary essential oil is a strong astringent, it’s great for tightening sagging skin. It can also help reduce swelling.

Keep out of reach of pets and children
